OSI Group: Largest food company in the world

OSI Group is a big company that is recognized not only in the United States but the whole world. It has over 20,000 employees in all its branches worldwide, has 65 food production facilities and has a presence in 17 countries on different continents. Their products are sold in even more countries. The Forbes listed OSI as one of the largest companies in the United States. In the top 100 private businesses in the country, OSI Group appeared at number #58 with a net worth of $6.1 billion.

OSI Group has in recent years embarked on a journey to introduce sustainability in the production work. It is embracing technology as one way of boosting its efficiency in production. This adoption of new technology takes us back to 1960s when the company managed to beat others in the food industry because of adopting early technological innovations. In fact, the company has been riding on technological growth to push its operations further. It is true to say that the company has done very well in terms of growth. It is on the same breath that the company is building upon technology to drive growth even further.

The real story of growth for the OSI Group started in the 1950s. Back then this food company was a family-owned business known as Otto & Sons. The first McDonald’s chain restaurant had just been set up in Des Plaines, Illinois. Remember, Otto & Sons was established in Chicago, Illinois and this was a good opportunity for them to team up with McDonald’s for a business deal. The partnership between these two businesses initiated the journey for Otto & Sons to become the biggest known food production company in the world.

The expansion of Otto & Sons started with regional expansion. McDonald’s opened a couple of restaurants around Illinois, and neighboring areas and Otto & Sons followed suit because they were the main supplier hamburgers to this company. Even though Otto & Sons started as a regional supplier to the McDonald’s its growth later took a huge twist when it started exploring possibilities of moving its business to the international arena.

The growth of this company is something that was impacted to a huge extent by the growth of the McDonald’s. The chain restaurant business did very well, and the OSI Group had to supply all these restaurants with the food products. This is where the major link between the two businesses kicked in.
